Lecture Notes - Textile Invention for Multiple Innovations

This week we received a guest lecture from Professor Parik Goswami. Professor Goswami is the head of the textile department here at the University of Huddersfield, he is also known for being and avid inventor within the material engineering sector.

Professor Goswami primarily thinks that innovation can be taught however, he believes there is a strong difference between invention and innovation. He sees invention as the idea that is created with the aim of making something new. Innovation is imagining the idea into a product and is generally seen as a successful application of the initial idea. The following equation is used to describe innovation.

Innovation = Invention + Exploitation

As an inventor, he was keen to share with us the importance of protection of our ideas through the power of intellectual property. The variations of security against intellectual property are: Trade Marks, Patents, Registered Designs, Copy Right. These forms of security made me reflect on my own work and how it is not secure. I will look further into this security as I progress with my Major Project as fashion is something that can be easily stolen.
