Grace
Wilson is a London based Illustrator. Some of her recent work reacts to
Britain’s cultural issues which I found to be very helpful within my own study.
From the heated debate regarding Scottish independence to the Black Lives
Matter protests which took place in London, she records her own opinions in the
form of brilliant short comics about the things she reads, sees and hears
within her everyday life.
Grace
draws the funny interactions and weird characters she notices in her day-today
life, from eating lunch in the park to working out in the gym, and they’re
equal parts hilarious, poignant and familiar. Above and beyond the craft that
goes into making these images caught between beautiful watercolour paintings
and details that are very reminiscent of the like of Charles Burns, is the
careful observation that feeds all of them. Reading through Grace’s experience
at the leisure centre for example, you get the sense of an opinion formed
without passing judgement which makes hers a voice you can’t help but want to
hear.

Grace
Wilson’s work is very inspiring as it takes serious current issues and evokes
humour from them. I may want to attempt this in my work on sustainability. This
sense of humour is what many people enjoy about Grace’s work, along with the
technical illustrative designs. The style in which she illustrates in not
something that is particularly suited to me however, I can see how this adds to
the humorist effect of the design.
