Upon reflection of the first brief, I began to think about
what I would like to base my major project on. The Future 100 made me think
about technologies and material we have in today’s world. From this I started to wonder whether these
technologies and materials will be available in the future. This ideology
refers to the concept of sustainability. Sustainability is the process of
maintaining something at a certain rate. From this reflection, I found the
topic of sustainability to be very interesting.
Below is a mind-map I have created on the topic of
sustainability.
I created this mind-map as I wanted to get my initial ideas down on paper as it would also help me within my project proposal. I found sustainability to be a very large topic with a number of different outcomes. As time progresses it will be useful to focus my thoughts towards one side of sustainability.
To help me create my study question I also looked into the briefs created by D&AD in order to gather inspiration. Design & Art Direction (D&AD) is a British educational charity organisation which exists to promote excellence in design and advertising. Widely considered one of the most prestigious and difficult-to-win awards in design and advertising, D&AD celebrates the finest creativity each year across a diverse range of disciplines. Each year D&AD release a set of briefs that anyone can take part in. I wanted to look at these briefs to find any similarities towards my area of sustainability. I have included the link to the briefs below.

After assessing the briefs, it was clear to see that none of
them were really insisting the use of sustainability other than maybe the
Hellman’s brief. However, sustainable outcomes could be used within all these
briefs. For now, I think my study question will suffice as it will later allow
me to focus on a particular area within sustainability. This area will be expressed through my Major Project.
