Junky Styling was formed in 1997 by Annika Sanders and
Kerry Seager who made clothes for themselves to wear out to clubs in the early
90s, during their late teens. Everything Junky Styling produces is
recycled from the best quality second hand clothing, deconstructed, re-cut and
completely transformed into a new product that belies the former identity of
the raw material. All products stocked in the Junky Store are either recycled,
fair trade, made from organic materials or ethically produced. They hope to
inspire all their customers to look at their discarded clothes and general
waste items with fresh eyes and a resourceful frame of mind.

Displayed above is an example of Junky Styling’s
clothing. Junky Styling have created a series of refashion how to, on the
V&A website where Annika shows how, with a few old garments, a needle and
thread and an eye for seeing things differently, you can make stylish garments.
This style of sustainable fashion design combats the
waste aliment of the industry. After reflection it could also be seen to combat
the effects of fast fashion. Fast fashion causes old items of clothing to be
thrown away or forgotten about, Junky Styling’s method gives these garments a continuous
shelf life. This style of sustainable design is slightly different towards what I
am wanting to create in my final major project. I don’t really see myself being
able to cut up old clothing and sew it back together as I have never really
done anything like that before. Counteracting the effects of fast fashion is in
fact an importance, and I must discover a way to do this through my concept.
